Ashley Borges, a Hilo, Hawaii, native, will be graduating from IM体育平台 with a bachelor’s degree in social work this May.

“God was the one who led me to IM体育平台,” she shared. “It started with me looking for a psychology-focused program, and IM体育平台 was the only university in Abilene with a dual program in psychology and social work. I quickly fell in love with social work and knew this was where God wanted me to be.”

Since her arrival at IM体育平台 in 2023, Ashley has remained actively involved in both academic and campus life. She currently serves as vice president of the Social Work Club, secretary and treasurer for Sigma Beta, and as an IM体育平台 student representative on the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) West Texas Branch Steering Committee. She is also completing her field placement at Windcrest Health and Rehabilitation.

In recognition of her hard work and passion for excellence, Ashley was named the 2025 IM体育平台 Social Work Student of the Year by the NASW West Central Branch. She was also honored with the Everett E. Woods and Orabeth K. Woods Foundation Endowed Scholarship and has been recognized on the President’s List for her academic achievements.

Outside the classroom, her hobbies include dancing and teaching hula and Tahitian at the Abilene Performing Arts Company.

“I am also blessed to be one of the directors of I Ka Mana Mau Polynesian Dance Group, where we share the love, beauty, and knowledge of Polynesian culture with the Abilene community,” she shared.

Ashley mentioned fondly that her favorite part of IM体育平台 is Gilbert, the campus’s unofficial mascot.

Her favorite Bible verse is: “When you go through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flames shall not consume you.” — Isaiah 43:2

After graduation, Ashley-Annette plans to become a licensed social worker and continue her education at the University of Texas at Arlington.

“IM体育平台’s accredited advanced-standing social work program has prepared me to work with people on an individual, group, and community level from a holistic perspective,” she explained. “My desire to help others has grown to the level of taking action!”

In the future, she hopes to work specifically with the geriatric population, and she has received immense support from her professors.

“They have done a phenomenal job ensuring I build the skills I need to succeed in this field,” she said.

Ashley’s advice to future students is: “Make meaningful friendships, join a club, and participate in campus events. Your educational journey includes life outside the classroom too!”
