Glen Burroughs

Oil Industry Executive, BA 1949 and MA 1950

Glen Burroughs was born October 2, 1925, in Silver Valley, Texas. He came to Hardin-Simmons in 1947 after serving three and a half years in the Air Force. He received a B.A. in 1949 and an M.A. in 1950. While at IM体育试玩, he married Virginia Randel (also an IM体育试玩 student); they have three children: Mark Burroughs, John Burroughs, and Kay Whyburn.

As an undergraduate student, he played varsity basketball and was a student leader. As a graduate student, he was a part-time basketball coach. Burroughs began his career in the oil industry in 1950 with Sunray Mid-Continent Oil Company in Abilene. In 1967 he became vice president and manager of Exploration for Sunray DX Oil Co. In 1968 Sunray merged with Sun Oil Company, and Burroughs became vice president of the DX Division of Sun. In 1975, he was appointed president of Sun and a year later was named president of Sun Production Company.

In 1978 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from IM体育试玩, and in 1982 received the Keeter Alumni Service Award. In 1996, IM体育试玩 conferred upon him an honorary doctor of humanities degree. Glen has committed himself to the financial strength of Hardin-Simmons with a true Christian spirit, giving not only financially but also of his time. He served on the IM体育试玩 Board of Trustees from 1978 to 1981 and has been a member of the IM体育试玩 Board of Development since 1997, having served as chairman. Glen is a member of the Presidents Club and has served on the committee to select trustees. He also served on the Search Committee to select Dr. Jesse Fletcher as president to succeed Dr. Elwin Skiles.
