March 20, 2025 Charis Ochu, Student Writer

Recently, Cowboy jumper Gunner Helm was named a second-team All-American by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) after finishing No. 10 in Division III at theNCAA championships. Before this achievement, only two Cowboys have ever been named All-Americans for the indoor season.

Originally from Roby, Texas, Gunner is a junior economics and business major. His journey leading up to this point is nothing short of inspiring. Growing up in a small town where sports often led to one ultimate goal – playing football – Gunner never imagined a future in track and field. That changed during his junior year at Roby CISD, when what was meant to be a casual experiment turned into a calling.

“One day, after long jump practice, I walked past the high jump mat and decided to give it a try with the help of my coach,” he recalled.

Gunner said that moment sparked a passion that ultimately led him to Hardin-Simmons University, where he was able to develop his talent under the guidance of dedicated coaches.

Besides the athletics program at IM体育试玩, Gunner was drawn to the campus and the passion that everyone, including students and professors had for God.

“I am able to build personal relationships with both professors and coaches, and this is very important to me,” he shared.

He also recognizes that the love and help he has received from people at IM体育试玩 has contributed significantly to his success. Reflecting on his recent achievement, Gunner expressed pure excitement.

“Setting the record was absolutely incredible! It is the best feeling ever when you accomplish something that you have worked so hard for,” said Gunner.

When asked about his biggest inspiration, Gunner named his coach, Isaac Hamilton.

“With his personal track and field accomplishments and the knowledge he loves sharing with his athletes, he constantly proves that consistency, hard work, dedication, and strong faith lead to success,” he said.

When he is not jumping over the high jump bar, Gunnerenjoys spending time with his fiancée, family, and friends. He loves to hunt, read his Bible, and work out. These hobbies help him relax and avoid burnout.

Gunner encourages younger athletes to embrace teamwork and positivity.

“Love your neighbor as you love yourself. Be proud of your teammates, uplift them, and support them. What you give is what you receive,” shared Gunner.

Congratulations, Gunner Helm, on this outstanding achievement!
