Abilene Hall’s Engineering Space Dedicated

On Tuesday, August 29, 2023, a dedication ceremony for Abilene Hall took place.

Over the past two years, Abilene Hall has been under construction, being retrofitted to house IM体育试玩’s engineering program. An additional 7,000 square feet were added to the building’s southern elevation. The first floor houses lab space for hands-on learning, while the second floor contains lecture halls, a computer lab, a student lounge, and data center. The third floor will continue to be under construction as it’s prepared to house IM体育试玩’s upcoming nursing program, scheduled to open in 2025. Read more about the dedication.

Abilene Hall Update and Naming Opportunities

Rebuilt in 1948 after the original structure was destroyed by fire, then closed due to the ice storm of 2021, IM体育试玩’s Abilene Hall was reopened with a dedication ceremony on August 29, 2023. While the first and second floors of Abilene Hall have been retrofitted to house IM体育试玩’s Mechanical Engineering program, which began this Fall with approximately 50 students, we’re working to retrofit the third floor for IM体育试玩’s own nursing program.

We anticipate welcoming nursing students beginning Spring ’25, pending SACSCOC accreditation and approval from the Texas Board of Nursing. Financially, we are one third of the way to our goal of retrofitting the third floor of Abilene Hall for the Nursing Program.

According to the Texas Nurses Association, “Texas is facing an acute shortage of nurses,” and the Texas Workforce Commission predicts that during the decade spanning 2016-2026, in-state demand for mechanical engineers will grow by more than 3,000 positions, an increase of more than 18%. Hardin-Simmons University (IM体育试玩) is excited to announce that its new on-campus nursing program has reached $8 million in funding, which includes a recent $1 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) along with generous contributions from foundations, alumni, friends, and donors, including $100,000 in nursing scholarships from a long-time IM体育试玩 legacy family.

Abilene Hall’s Nursing Space Dedicated

The dedication of Hardin-Simmons University’s new School of Nursing, housed on the top floor of the historic Abilene Hall, marks a pivotal chapter in the university’s century-long commitment to the health sciences and the preparation of compassionate, skilled nurses.

Abilene Hall, a historic cornerstone of the campus since 1913, has been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility. While the engineering department will occupy the lower floors, the top floor is dedicated to the School of Nursing, providing a space for future nurses to learn, grow, and develop their skills. This modern environment, complete with hands-on learning labs and innovative teaching spaces, reflects IM体育试玩’s ongoing commitment to excellence in education.

As we dedicate this program and its new home, we reflect on IM体育试玩’s rich history of nursing education and look forward to a bright future of service.
